Remember Why We’re Here

Shane.

Shane Mohney was a great individual that could infect anyone around him with happiness just by flashing a smile. He was a very genuine man who was liked by anyone that met him. When Shane was diagnosed with stomach cancer his friends and family came up with the idea of doing a fundraiser softball tournament to help with treatment costs.  This tournament was called “The Shane Mohney Tournament”.

He was able to play in the first tournament but not for long as while running down the baseline he fell and broke his hip, sending him to the hospital to get evaluated. This didn’t stop Shane from coming back out after getting released and enjoying the remainder of the tournament from the sideline, of course with a smile on his face. Seeing how happy he was to be out with so many people that cared about him was enough to call the tournament a success.

Shane passed away three months later in November 2000. With all the money raised and memories made it was decided to make the tournament an annual event, with all proceeds going to the Shane Mohney Foundation. In honor of Shane, the foundation contributes two scholarships every year, ranging from $500 to $2,000 over to Lawton High School students (his alma mater).

Danny.

Our story doesn’t stop there. Danny Motter was the true heart and soul of this memorial tournament from the very first one right up until his passing in January 2018. Danny truly enjoyed every moment of the Shane Mohney Memorial Tournament and believed wholeheartedly in the saying “Live Each Day To The Fullest”.

The dedication that this man put into this tournament was above anything anyone could imagine. He was planning the next year’s tournament even before the current one was over. Each year new teams would arrive, and Danny would welcome them to the family with open arms. He loved to see the happiness, laughter, and sometimes tears (his own of course) that this tournament brought to people.

Danny Motter was one of the happiest people that you could ever meet, always walking around with a smile on his face and he was determined to make everyone around him smile too. If anyone struck up any kind of conversation with Danny at the tournament he would go out of his way to remember their name and make a point to find them the next year.

His thoughtfulness, kind heart, and love for the game of softball created a community around this tournament that has kept it going all of these years. In honor of Danny and his dedication to the Shane Mohney Foundation the Danny’s Kids Golf Outing was born in 2021. Proceeds go to the Shane Mohney Foundation to help support the scholarship program.
